Dr. Se-Kwang Park, Chief Ophthalmologist at BGN Eye Clinic Jamsil, shares key factors patients should check before choosing a clinic for SMILE LASIK
Why Does the Cost of “SMILE LASIK” Differ Between Clinics?
SMILE LASIK is a laser vision correction procedure that creates a thin lenticule within the corneal stroma, which is then removed through a small incision of approximately 2 mm to correct refractive error. SMILE Pro is the latest generation of this technology, designed to reduce laser treatment time while compensating for subtle eye movements and changes in the astigmatic axis during surgery.
According to Dr. Park, differences in pricing are not simply a matter of profit margins. Costs often reflect variations in the comprehensiveness of preoperative examinations, the sophistication of diagnostic and surgical equipment, and the quality of postoperative management.
Dr. Park explained, “Whether it is SMILE LASIK or SMILE Pro, the results cannot be judged solely by the equipment being used.” he added, “The key is how accurately a patient’s eyes are evaluated and how those findings are used to determine surgical suitability and the appropriate treatment plan.” In other words, a lower price does not necessarily indicate that the quality of examination or surgery is equivalent.
Three Factors That Matter as Much as Cost
1. How Comprehensive Are the Preoperative Examinations?
Some clinics offering lower prices may simplify the examination process. Patients should ensure that the clinic thoroughly evaluates corneal thickness and shape, refractive error, astigmatism, and dry eye status before determining whether surgery is appropriate.
Dr. Park said, “When selecting an eye clinic, patients should look beyond convenience or cost and first examine the quality of the diagnostic system.” he added, “More important than the number of tests is whether the physician can accurately interpret the results and clearly explain what they mean.”
2. How Extensive Is the Surgeon’s Clinical Experience?
The amount of vision correction and the surgical approach are not determined by a price list. They should be tailored to each patient’s eye condition, age, occupation, and lifestyle.
Dr. Park noted, “For patients with high myopia or significant astigmatism, where every case is different, the surgeon’s clinical experience plays a critical role in selecting the most appropriate procedure and responding effectively to unexpected situations during surgery.”
3. Are the Surgical Devices Clinically Verified?
Patients attracted by lower prices may overlook the equipment used during surgery. Dr. Park recommends confirming that the devices have received regulatory approval from recognized authorities, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European CE marking, and Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
BGN Eye Clinic uses the ZEISS VISUMAX platform, which has received approvals from the FDA, CE, and the Korean MFDS. It is also among the few lenticule extraction systems to have obtained FDA approval.
Dr. Park emphasized, “In addition to the surgeon’s experience, patients should evaluate whether the clinic uses clinically validated equipment and provides a structured postoperative follow-up system.”
What Price Alone Cannot Tell You
Comprehensive testing may reveal that a patient’s preferred surgical option is not the most suitable choice.
Dr. Park said, “In some cases, patients should be offered alternative treatments, or advised against surgery altogether.” he added, “A thorough explanation of these findings is an essential part of patient care. Preoperative testing is not simply a procedural step before surgery; it is an objective process to determine whether surgery should be performed in the first place.”
Patients should also consider whether clinics emphasizing low prices provide sufficient consultation and explanation before making treatment recommendations.
Look Beyond the Price Tag
Dr. Park stressed that selecting an eye clinic should not be based solely on the popularity of a particular procedure, the clinic's location, or its advertised price.
He said, “Ultimately, the most important factor is whether the clinic has a comprehensive examination and treatment system tailored to each patient’s individual eye condition.”
Although cost is naturally an important consideration, clinics offering similar prices may differ significantly in the quality of their diagnostic testing, the experience of their surgeons, and the technology they employ. Rather than asking simply, “How much does it cost?”, patients should consider the medical value included within that price.
