The First Round of Meetings of the Korea-China Consultation Mechanism for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine to be Held

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The first round of meetings of the Korea-China Consultation Mechanism for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine will be held on January 18, 2006 in Beijing, China. Mr. Joong-keun Kim, the Deputy Minister for Trade of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, will head the Korean delegation, consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Maritimes Affairs and Fisheries, Korean Food and Drug Administration, and Ministry of Construction and Transportation. Mr. Ge Zhirong, the Vice-Minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China, will head China’s delegation, consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Food and Drug Administration, State Animal and Plant Quarantine Administration, General Administration of Inspection and Quarantine, and General Administration of Customs.

At this year’s meeting, the Korea-China bilateral cooperation in quality supervision, inspection and quarantine will be evaluated and plans for an early warning system between Korea and China in the field of inspection and quarantine will be established. Also, the meeting will exchange views on the possibility of examining the organization of subcommittees in each field when necessary.

The two sides will exchange views on the fields of mutual interests such as the acceleration of the amendments to the cooperation agreement on food safety and strengthening cooperation in quality inspections on industrial products as well as strengthening supervision of Chinese marine products

Following the agreement to hold a high level meeting at the Korea-China Summit Talks in July 2003, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine concluded a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2003. The first round of the Korea-China Consultation Mechanism for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine Conference on January 18, 2006 was agreed to be held at the earliest possible date in Beijing at APEC in November 2005.

Currently, China is Korea’s largest trading partner with a trade volume amounting to USD100 billion. As such, the High Level Meeting, which broadly discusses issues such as the inspection and quarantine of agricultural, marine, food and industrial products, is expected to help smooth the secure and continuous development of future economic relations between the two countries.
