Trade figures for January 2006

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--According to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE), Korea’s exports rose 4.3% year-on-year to USD $23.42 billion in January 2006 while imports were $22.83 billion, a 17.6% increase from a year ago. In all, the nation posted a trade surplus of $0.59 billion in January.

Korea’s exports last month achieved growth despite high oil prices, five-day Lunar New Year holidays, and instable exchange rates. The average daily exports posted $1.04 billion, up from 0.98 billion last year.

Also in January 2006, outbound shipments recorded a double-digit increase in automobile parts (44.6%), petroleum products (36.3%), general machinery (26.5%), and semiconductors (14%). Overseas sales of wireless communications devices and petrochemicals also increased by 6.1% and 3.4%, respectively. However, sales of ships dropped by 38.2%, steel by 2.9%, and automobiles by 0.8%.

As for exports of computers, electronic appliances, and textiles, overseas sales continued to fall due to growing competition from developing countries as well as the fact that a growing number of manufacturers are churning out their products in low-cost global production bases. Sales of computers were down by 4.2%, electronic appliances by 8.8%, and textiles by 5.4%.

By region, outbound shipments to China grew by 30.2%, Japan by 28.5%, the Middle East by 22.4%, and ASEAN by 20.2%.

Meanwhile, the nation’s imports climbed by 17.6% year-on-year in January to $22.83 billion, affected by increasing costs of crude oil and other raw materials. The average daily imports were $1.01 billion, surpassing the $1 billion-level for the past four months.

By product, inbound shipments of raw materials and consumer goods were up by 50.2% and by 24% from the previous year. Imports of capital goods also grew by 12.3% in January 2006.

By region, imports from the Middle East increased by 126%, ASEAN by 31%, and China by 20.8%. In addition, imports from Japan were up by 7.8%, three times higher than 2.4% in the same period of last year.

In total, Korea recorded a trade surplus of $0.59 billion in January. Korea posted a trade surplus of 0.24 billion with the U.S. and 0.99 billion with China. Trade with Japan continued to post a deficit of 1.06 billion.
