Services figures for 2005

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Exports in the service sector rose 8.3% year-on-year in 2005 to USD $45.37 billion while imports were $58.46 billion, an increase of 17.1% from a year earlier. As a result, Korea’s trade in services posted a deficit of $13.09 billion in 2005.

The deficit in services grew by 62.7% year-on-year as growth in tourism and business-related services imports surpassed the surplus volume in transportation.

In 2005, exports in transportation increased 6% year-on-year to $23.88 billion while imports were $19.97 billion, an increase of 13.1% from the previous year. The trade in transportation, which represented 29.9% in services trade, recorded a surplus of $3.92 billion last year.

By contrast, the tourism industry posted a deficit of $9.65 billion in 2005. Inbound tourism increased 24% to $15.31 billion as the total number of outbound travelers recorded 6,021,000 people, a 3.5% increase compared with the previous year. However, outbound tourism fell 6.7% from a year ago to $5.66 billion with outbound travelers hitting 10,077,000 people, up 14.2% from a year earlier.

As for business-related services, exports and imports were up by 19.7% to $9.73 billion and by 20.6% to $15.88 billion, respectively. In total, business-related services posted a trade deficit of $6.15 billion in 2005.
