Clean technology initiative to help Korean businesses go green
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) announced that it would foster clean technology aimed at controlling materials harmful to the environment. Clean technology encompasses a wide range of technologies that could be utilized along all lines of the manufacturing process (from product design to disposal or recycling) to ensure lower harmful emissions.
The initiative is part of the government’s response to the Kyoto Protocol, which took effect a year ago last February. For now, Korea is categorized as a "developing country" so that it will not have to meet emission obligations until 2012.
MOCIE’ clean technology initiative aims to achieve the following objectives:
1) to foster technologies in preparation for tougher international environmental regulations;
2) to create a better and cleaner environment at workplaces such as factories;
3) to promote sustainable industrial development;
4) to build basic infrastructure for green production;
5) to further disseminate green technology industry-wide
6) to advance environment-friendly management techniques such as supply-chain environment management (SCEM).
To this end, the Ministry will set aside 38 billion won in 2006. In particular, 13 billion won or 34% of the funding will be allocated to developing technologies, which will raise environmental standards to international levels.
The initiative would rely on voluntary participation of businesses to further disseminate the technology to wider industries.
