Overseas sales of electronic products top $100 billion

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--In 2005, Korea topped USD $100 billion in electronic exports, becoming only one of four countries to do so. (The other three are the U.S., Japan and China.)

This marks the first time a local industry has exceeded the $100-billion level in overseas sales. Korean electronic products have become increasingly popular abroad, taking up 7.1% of the global market as of 2004. Robust exports were fueled by increased global demand for such key export items as semiconductors, mobile phones, and liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Exports of Korean electronic products have grown by an average 22.1% per year since 1972.

Korea’s electronics sales, amounting to $102.8 billion in 2005, accounted for 36% of the nation’s total exports. The sector helped to employ 606,000 workers in 2003.

To keep the momentum going strong, Korea will promote the following:

1) To become a global leader in developing breakthrough technologies;
2) To enhance the competitiveness of the parts and materials industry by promoting the development of high-tech key components and strengthening cooperation between large conglomerates and SMEs;
3)To build a pro-business environment; and
4) To foster world-class products by enhancing overseas marketing and international technology cooperation.
