Retail figures for January

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--According to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE), sales at Korea’s major retailers have been on the upward trend, buoyed by a seasonal demand for home and living goods and food.

Sales at discount outlets increased 18.9% in January year-on-year. Department stores also saw their year-on-year sales rise by 11.6% from a year ago.

The increase in sales at discount outlets was seen in food (29.2 %%), electronic appliances and cultural products (17.8%), home and living goods (16.3%), and clothing (10.7%). The number of customers visiting discount outlets was up by 4.4% in January. The actual value of purchase per customer rose by 13.9% to 48,109 won from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, sales at department stores increased in food (54.6%), women’s casual wear (5.3%), and men’s apparel (6.1%). The number of customers was down by 2.8% while the actual value of purchase per customer grew by 15.3% to 74,912 won.

The major discount stores in the survey are E-Mart, Lotte Mart, and Samsung Tesco Homeplus. The department stores surveyed are Hyundai, Lotte, and Shinsegae.
