Korea deposits with UN Secretary General declaration not accpeting dispute resolution under UN Convention on Law of Sea

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--On 18 April, the Government of the Republic of Korea deposited with the United Nations Secretary General a declaration opting for not accepting dispute resolution procedures under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. The following is the main text of the declaration:

In accordance with paragraph 1 of Article 298 of the Convention, the Republic of Korea does not accept any of the procedures provided for in section 2 of Part XV of the Convention with respect to all the categories of disputes referred to in paragraph 1 (a), (b) and (c) of Article 298 of the Convention.

The present declaration shall be effective immediately.

Nothing in the present declaration shall affect the right of the Republic of Korea to submit a request to a court or tribunal referred to in Article 287 of the Convention to be permitted to intervene in the proceedings of any dispute between other States Parties, should it consider that it has an interest of a legal nature which may be affected by the decision in that dispute.
