As a result of the eruption of the Ubinas volcano,
UNICEF sent supplies to attend the population’s basic needs

Lima-Peru, April 24th 2006 - UNICEF, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, , and the UNCT, has sent water supplies to the communities affected by the eruption of the Ubinas volcano to ensure that all families have access to clean drinking water, in particular the region’s children. Since the polluted river was the communities’ main water source, the supplies sent by UNICEF consist in 20 liter-cans to store water, tablets of chlorine to purify the water, and other supplies to measure the level of chlorine in the water. In addition, UNICEF has sent Cotrimozasol, an antibiotic to treat children’s respiratory infections and diarrhea.

The Ubinas volcano is located in the Region of Moquegua, in the southern part of Peru, and is affecting over 3,500 people who live in the Ubinas’ valley. Its ashes have already polluted the environment and the river causing gastrointestinal and conjunctivitis problems in the Ubinas valley’s population.

During emergency crises, UNICEF’s priority is to minimize its effects on children, since they are the most susceptible to catch illnesses that endanger their health. Access to safe water is one of UNICEF’s main concerns, as potable water is fundamental to keep the children healthy in emergency situations.
