Q1 2006 Household income/expenditure analysis

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The income disparity between the richest 20 percent of urban employees and the poorest 20 percent slightly narrowed in Q1 2006 in Korea.

The average income of the richest 20 percent urban employees was 5.80 times higher than that of the poorest 20 percent in Q1 2006. The figure was 5.87 in the same period last year.

The improvement was feasible as the poorest 20 percent group's income rose faster (5.3 percent) than that of the richest 20 percent group (4.1 percent) during the first three months this year.

Compared to Q4 2005, the ratio of richest 20 percent group income to the poorest 20 percent income climbed from 5.42 to 5.80 due to seasonal factors.

Among the nationwide households, including households of self-employed and without occupations , the ratio of the highest 20 percent's income to the lowest 20 percent's rose from 8.22 in Q1 2005 to 8.36 in Q1 2006. The deterioration of income distribution was attributable to the decrease in irregular incomes, such as lump-sum severance payments.

Meanwhile, taking into account ordinary incomes alone, the ratio has improved compared with the same period last year from 8.07 to 8.02.

In particular, the income distribution of Q1 this year improved considerably as the earned income of the lowest 20 percent group surged on the back of accelerating economic recovery.

- Income growth of the lowest 20 percent group: 0.43% (Q4 2005) -> 9.01%(Q1 2006)

However, the income gap among the self-employed is not yet signaling signs of improvement. The poorest 20 percent income group earned 5.5 percent less from a year earlier, while the richest 20 percent group earned 5.4 percent more during the same period.

Income of the nationwide households continued the upward track with 4.1 percent increase in Q4 2005 and 4.2 percent increase in Q1 2006 respectively. On top of such improvements in appearance, the quality of income growth improved substantially as the earned income and business income rose at a faster pace from the previous quarter.

- Earned income growth: 3.2% (Q4 2005) -> 4.2% (Q1 2006)

- Business income growth: 3.0% (Q4 2005) -> 3.8% (Q1 2006)

As the economic revival strongly boosts the growth of low incomers' earned income, the income disparity between the richest 20 percent and the poorest 20 percent group is expected to decrease gradually.

In the case of the self-employed, the income gap is not likely to narrow by a large margin for the time being in view of the on-going market restructuring. However, there are expected to be rooms for further improvements over time taking into account the steady recovery in the service sector.
