Samsung Electronics to Put Air Purification Technology to Work on Airplanes
When an airliner is in flight, the cabin interior experiences a drop pressure and humidity, while ozone and carbon dioxide levels increase. Moreover, the passengers spread viruses as they breathe the cabin air and converse, and the air quality naturally degrades. The passengers are confined to a tight space within this polluted environment for a long time, which means they run a high risk of becoming infected by some airborne malady. Some countries like the US have demanded that steps be taken to remedy the air quality situation onboard aircraft.
The US federal government thus has provided grants for eight different research projects and one of the projects is intended to prevent the contamination of aircraft cabin air. The Samsung MPI technology will be used in one of these projects.
Until now, the only way to address the problem has been to disinfect the cabin interior prior to takeoff. Once airborne, the passengers are unavoidably exposed to one another’s germs.
Samsung applied MPI to its air conditioners and air purifiers. In addition to airplanes, the technology is being studied for use inside automobiles. The automotive industry is showing great interest in MPI, and Samsung is about to sign MOUs with several of the world’s major automakers. The company also expects applications to expand to hospitals and industrial facilities.
Samsung developed MPI after more than three years of research. The effectiveness of the technology was proven in studies at Kitasato Medical Center, a renowned research center on viruses in Japan, and British Allergy Foundation in the UK.
The Chief of Samsung’s Digital Appliances R&D Center, Choi Dochul, says “Our involvement in the ACER project serves as international recognition of our air purification technology. We plan to expand the application of MPI technology to improve the air quality in residences, hospitals, offices, vehicles and aircrafts.”
Samsung was officially invited to join the Airliner Cabin Environment Research (ACER) project funded by the US government and the company became the first non-US industrial partner in the project.
