Outcomes of the Korea-E.U. trade ministers' talks

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--On May 15, the Korea-EU Trade Ministers' Talks were held between Korea's Trade Minister, Mr. Kim Hyun-chong and the E.U. Trade Commissioner, Mr. Mandelson, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat in Manila, the Philippines, to discuss various issues of mutual interest including pending bilateral trade issues and the outlook for the promotion of the DDA negotiations.

At the Korea-EU Trade Ministers' Talks, both sides expressed their concern for missing the April 30th deadline for the liberalization and modalities agreement of agricultural products and NAMA areas and the slow progress of the DDA negotiations. They agreed that all WTO members must make their utmost efforts to arrive at an agreement on modalities by the end of July, at the latest, in order to successfully conclude the DDA negotiations at the end of this year as scheduled. Both sides reconfirmed their mutual concerns in various areas of the DDA Negotiations and promised to focus their efforts for making progress at the negotiations.

The EU side explained that it is looking into ways for strengthening bilateral cooperative relations to supplement the outcomes of the DDA negotiations. Without the precondition of launching negotiations, both sides agreed to hold preliminary discussions on the possibility of promoting a Korea-E.U. FTA.
