In this regard, Renesas Korea was established in April last year to strengthen the marketing and technical supports in Korea, which is a golden market to the company with 10% share of its revenue.
Chairman Ito said, “Korea is definitely a key cradle of the global IT industry these days. We are planning to double our revenue for Korean market in 2008, US $1.2 billion, maintaining strategic partnerships with Korean customers and vendors, which we expect to share our vision and life together as we already do now.”
It has close relationship with around 30 Korean companies which have excellent system integration and middleware solutions. Renesas reflects Korean market’s needs accurately to its chip development and design service, based on the information and requests from regular meetings with Korean mobile communication companies such as SK Telecom, KTF, and LG Telecom.
SH-Mobile, global mobile leadership
Through this effort, the company gained great success that all of major Korean mobile phone makers have been adopting SH-Mobile standards in their phones. Meanwhile, the company is gaining powers in the mobile phone market through the SH-Mobile application processors with high flexibility and extension.
To take a market leadership, it succeeded in securing some 230 global companies for its-own initiated SH-Mobile consortium. Renesas has been providing customized services to its consumers in mobile, automotive and PC/AV markets with system and SoC/SIP solutions.
Wider technology reach
According to recent announcement from iSupply, a market research company, Renesas is reported to be the world’s number one position with 21% market share in the MCU field. The company aims to reach 30% share in the market and 35% especially in flash type MCU market.
Its brisk upmarket beat doesn’t stop here. It is said, by industry insiders, to rank the fourth of the automotive semiconductors manufacturing. Plans are in the pipeline to run atop until 2010 in this sector, and to this end, the company established an automotive semiconductor unit in its HQ, Japan, aggressively expanding into the European and North American market from the Asian-centric market.
Renesas’ SoC technology is gaining a momentum due to its fast and flexible features, based on its newly developed SoC platform “EXREAL PlatformTM”. It reduces the cost and product size by integrating various hardware, OS and middleware in one chip with new SoC platform’s features, which are, reliability, efficiency and agility, designed to give high performance on lower power consumption.
“We are also strengthening the SiP technology to cope with design needs of high performance from the customers wishing to shorten the development period and provide superior technology. It will be integrated with SoCs and ASICs and other customized chipsets in the near future.”
As a global company, Renesas also propelling its every resource in China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia: for R&D, production, sales, and engineering supports. The company expects to leverage its market share and revenue with this Asian focus later on.
Keynote speaker at Seoul Digital Forum
Chairman Ito was invited as a keynote speaker representing the global semiconductor companies at ‘Seoul Digital Forum’’ scheduled to be held at Sheraton Grand Hotel in Seoul from May 24 (Wed) to 26 (Fri).
He will deliver a keynote speech as ‘The Future of Digital through Semiconductor’ on May 26 as a leading figure in the global semiconductor industry. He is supposed to suggest an analysis and the role of the semiconductors as a core of IT industry, the digital devices enabled with semiconductor and possible future business items. Through the in-depth and visionary presentation, he will take a look into human, digital and ubiquitous society.
Renesas has introduced the SH-Mobile (SuperH Mobile Application Processor); designed to offload application processing from the baseband LSI, this is a solution to ease system development and realize significant performance improvement. SH-Mobile enables separation of the application software and communications protocol software developments. This baseband independent approach reduces time-to-market, and allows rapid evolution of multimedia applications whilst retaining investment in established communications protocol software. The SH3-DSP core can accomplish multimedia processing supporting standards such as JPEG, MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3), and MPEG-4. Using the DSP instructions of the SH3-DSP, an average performance increase of 200% can be achieved for most middleware. This reduces CPU speed requirements and in turn power consumption.
