SKT excels in voice call and LGT in SMS
Marketing Insight, Inc. (www.mktinsight.co.kr, CEO: Kim Jin-Kook), a consumer research company that has been conducting a study on more than 100,000 mobile phone owners every six months, surveyed 14,903 wireless users in March 2006 who purchased a handset between April and September in 2005.
The study recorded the number of call quality problems consumers experience on average for every 100 handsets (PPH: Problems Per Hundred), revealing that one consumer reported an average of 6.7 problems (670 PPH). The SKT subscribers experienced the fewest problems with a score of 628 PPH, followed by KTF (714 PPH), and LGT (720).
SKT has been maintaining the No. 1 position. Although the Competitiveness Index (a carrier’s call quality score / the industry average x 100) results of the past three studies indicate a slight decrease in the scores of SKT (1st wave: 91.0%; 2nd wave: 92.6%; 3rd wave: 93.7%), the industry leader is still well ahead of its competitors whose scores have been between 105 and 108 [Figure 1]. LGT had been leading KTF until the latter turned it around in this study.
The study of Call quality consists of three categories: Idle/Calling, sending/receiving SMS, and call performance. By category, call performance has reported the most problems with 365.0 PPH taken 54.4%, followed by Idle/Calling with 190.9 PPH taken 28.5%, and sending/receiving SMS with 114.5 PPH taken 17.1%.
Respectively, SKT and LGT are excellent in ‘Idle/Calling’ and ‘call performance’, sending/receiving SMS.
Call quality was measured by a total of 36 items. The most problematic item was identified as "Unable to send (delivery failure)” (37.25 PPH), followed by "Takes a long time to connect.” (36.58 PPH), and "Unable to initiate” (34.65 PPH).
The worst 10 items include five ‘Call performance’-related problems, three ‘Send /Receive SMS’, and two ‘Idle/Calling’ problems.
Looking at the number of BIC and WIC in Worst 10 Items by carrier, SKT reported five and one, KTF one and six, and LGT four and three of BIC and WIC, respectively. KTF scored lowest in all the fist five worst items, while LGT and SKT scored highest in the four and one of them, respectively.
