Korea to join the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia(CICA)

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The Government of the Republic of Korea is endeavoring to officially join the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) as a Member State on the occasion of attending the Second Summit of CICA in Almaty, Kazakhstan on June 17.

CICA was launched under the leadership of Kazakhstan in 1993 as a regional security forum for peace and stability of not just Central Asia but the entire Asian region through confidence building measures and economic, social and cultural cooperation among its Member States along the same lines as OSCE in Europe.

The ROK has been attending CICA as an Observer since 1993. If we join as an official Member State at the upcoming Summit, our membership is expected to help expand the scope of our activities in security dialogues from East Asia through ARF to Central Asia. It is also expected to contribute to our efforts to secure cooperation for confidence building measures on the Korean Peninsula, the promotion of mutual exchanges and cooperation with other Member States through various activities including summit meetings, and the enhancement of friendly ties with Kazakhstan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ban Ki-moon plans to attend the Second Summit of CICA as a Special Envoy of President Roh Moo-hyun, and sign relevant documents for joining CICA as a Member State.
