Creator of a digital lifestyle: LG Corporate Design Center titled as ‘Design Team of the Year 2006’ by reddot design award

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--LG Electronics (LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communications, has won the ‘Design Team of the Year 2006’ of reddot design award for its focus on design management. This is only the second time that the design department of an Asian company has won reddot’s ‘Radius’ Trophy.

The festive award ceremony was held in the Aalto Theatre of Essen, Germany on June 26with more than 1,200 guests representing the design industry, business, media, politics, and culture attending. At the award presentation, president of Italdesign Giorgetto Giugiaro gave a speech honoring the LG design team.

reddot has presented its ‘Design Team of the Year’ Award to teams that set new standards in design through their innovation, since 1998. Other hall of famers include Apple, adidas, Mercedes-Benz, Nokia, Audi and Sony, the only other Asian company to win the award.

The ‘Radius’ Trophy, on which are inscribed all the names of honorees since 1989, was presented to Jae Jin Shim, head of Display and Media Design at LG Electronics, by Mr. Stephan Dietrich of the adidas Design Department, last year’s winner.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the reddot design award and president of the international umbrella organisation of design Icsid.,explained the selection of LG for design team of the year: “LG have a position of their own and set trends with products such as the wall mounted projector,” and “Via technology and design, LG has made the step from pursuer to contender. All its activities and products focus on human needs in the digital age.”

President Dr. Hee-Gook Lee, CTO and Head of LG Electronics’ CorporateDesign Center, said, “Many people ask me why a chief technology officer would focus on design. At LG, design is just as important as technology -- internally, we even refer to R&D as 'research and design.' Our focus is not just on technology, but on creating products that enhance the lives of our customers. Our designers come up with great ideas, and our engineers make them happen.”

LG solidified its existing commitment to design on June 16, officially declaringits “Era of Design Management.” Many factors have facilitated the company’s ability to compete so effectively on design. LG’s Corporate Design Center is headed by the company’s CTO, and is treated with the same importance as the company’s technology R&D centers.

Earlier this year LG broke industry records winning in 20 categories at the reddot design awards and 11 categories at the prestigious iF Design Awards. Some products that propelled the company to the top were its Wall-mounted projector (AN110), Dual-core widescreen notebook PC (T1), 50-inch plasma TV, 42-inch LCD TV, front-loading washing machine and Chocolate phone, etc. The Wall-mounted projector and Dual-core widescreen notebook PCdid especially well, winning reddot’s ‘Best of the Best’ design award. The Chocolate phone is not only a best seller in Europe and Asia, but also the talk of the design industry.

LG is the first company making a full range of electronics products to win the Design Team of the Year Award. LG’s award-winning products will be exhibited at reddot’s Design Museum until next year’s award ceremony.
