Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE:ADI), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal processing applications, announced that Blackfin? has been designed into a new hybrid set-top box from Sunniwell, a prominent Beijing-based supplier of hardware and software solutions for Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) and video on demand (VOD). The new product, the Sunniwell 4120-DVB, is the industry’s first set-top box that will allow service providers to offer digital video broadcast (DVB-C/S/T) and IP-based video as well as Internet access using the same economical device in subscriber’s homes. The Sunniwell 4120-DVB is available to service providers in Asia now.

Sunniwell’s hybrid set-top box is built on Analog Devices’ Blackfin eMedia Platform BF533eM10 to enable a convergence of functionality: field upgradability to new DVB systems; high-quality, multiformat IPTV streaming decoding; and expandability to new services such as voice over IP (VoIP). With ADI’s Blackfin at its heart, the Blackfin eMedia Platform brings further advantages that include low power consumption and upgradable software-based support for existing and emerging audio and video codecs. As a result, the Sunniwell set-top box is capable of handling standard-definition (SD) formats that include MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and WMV9, with both unicast and multicast protocol support.

Analog Devices’ AD1981B audio codec complements Blackfin in the set-top box design, producing first-class sound quality and mixing functions for DVB and IPTV digital audio.

According to Sunniwell, support for VOD and IPTV and the latest codecs will position service providers to build revenue with appealing new services and increase return on investment in their broadband infrastructures. Adding to the versatility of the compact Sunniwell 4120-DVB unit are two Ethernet connectors that allow this set-top box to function as a residential gateway for Internet access.

“As a leading supplier of set-top boxes in Asia, we had an uncompromising vision of the technology requirements for our newest, most advanced set-top box design,” said Jiang Wen, general manager, Sunniwell Broadband Digital Science & Technology. “No other choice offered as much as Analog Devices’ Blackfin based on our needs for multi-codec support, high-quality video and audio, software upgrade flexibility, and overall cost-effectiveness.”

“Sunniwell’s latest product is an outstanding example of the increasing capabilities that set-top box designers have in their sights,” said John Croteau, general manager, Convergent Platforms and Services Group, Analog Devices. “Yet in addition to advanced functionality such as multiformat audio and video, affordability and upgradability have to be part of the picture for devices that will be deployed to service providers’ subscribers. This hybrid set-top box shows how well Blackfin brings together the essentials for convergent applications like this one.”
