Volvo Construction Equipment, Completes Virtual Product Development Center after 15 billion won investment
Volvo Construction Equipment, a global excavator leader, holds the opening ceremony of Virtual Product Development Center on October 26 in its R&D complex located in Changwon city, which will be attended by Kim, Jong-Kap, Vice Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy. Volvo Construction Equipment has driven a detailed plan to innovate R&D infrastructure from 2004 and invested 15 billion won in building the VPD Center, out of the total project fund of 19.5 billion won. Volvo Construction Equipment plans to hire about 30 employees this year and will increase this number up to 100.
The VPD Center, the first ever product development lab employing virtual simulation technologies in the world’s excavator industry, is a 2-story, 828-pyoung facility. It is expected to bring a dramatic improvement in excavator quality by enabling comprehensive performance test and verification at all stages from drawing to product completion. Also, it will significantly reduce the time to market of a new excavator from current 23 months to 15 months.
The VPD center opened today is equipped with 14 test rooms, including a large test room that can check the control and vibration devices of a 90-ton excavator, a soundproof room with constant temperature and humidity for precise noise measurement, an environment test room that can create a temperature from -50 degrees to 150 degrees Celsius enabling environmental appropriateness test, and a virtual simulation room that can virtually recreate situations that can not created in reality. All these facilities will be built by 2008. Especially, the virtual simulation test room will enable more precise and detailed tests by integrating comprehensive test result data and creating a virtual excavator in a variety of virtual environment.
