18th APEC Ministerial Meeting to be Held

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The 18th APEC Ministerial Meeting of foreign and trade ministers will be held from November 15-16, 2006 in Hanoi, Vietnam with the participation of ministers from 21 APEC member economies. At this year's meeting, preparations will be made for the upcoming 14th APEC Summit Meeting from November 18-19, 2006. The delegation of the Republic of Korea will be led by acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Yu Myung-hwan and Minister for Trade, Mr. Kim Hyun-chong.

At this year's meeting the ministers plan to discuss issues such as strengthening the multilateral trading system, implementing the Busan Roadmap, RTAs/FTAs, creating a good environment for smooth trading, intellectual property rights, counter terrorism, health security, disaster measures, energy security, human security, the future of APEC, and promotion of anti-corruption and transparency, among others.

* Busan Roadmap: was agreed to at the 2005 Summit Meeting to ensure that the Bogor Goals of trade and investment liberalization for developed economies by 2020 and developing economies by 2020 would be achieved.

Especially, at this year's meeting, ministers will discuss ways for APEC, which has consistently supported strengthening the multilateral trading system from the very beginning of its establishment, to support and bring about an early settlement to the stalled WTO DDA negotiations since July.

Also, there will be a review of the Busan Roadmap that was put forth by Korea, the chair country of last year's summit meeting, to examine the projects for realizing the Busan Roadmap and standard models for RTAs/FTAs, the outcomes of which will be reported at the Ministers' Meeting.

* Standard models for RTAs/FTAs: a standard outline to guide member economies in FTA negotiations.

Meanwhile, our delegation plans to actively discuss Korea's proposal to support businesses to initiate trade and investment and economic and technical cooperation, as well as counter terrorism cooperation including human security cooperation, and APEC reform and future. Korea will also contribute to the progress of several other discussions.

At this year's Ministers' Meeting acting Minister Yu Myung-hwan and Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong plan to hold bilateral talks with major friendly nations and trading partners to exchange views on bilateral foreign affairs and trade issues.
