Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalists Announced
Over the past 66 years, the STS has produced winners of the world's most prestigious academic honors. Six former finalists have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. STS finalists have also been awarded the Fields Medal, the National Medal of Science and MacArthur Foundation Fellowships.
"We live in an era when excellence in math and science is critical to not only individual success but to our nation's ability to compete," said Intel Chairman Craig Barrett. "Intel STS brings together exceptional students who embody the American tradition of innovation, and whose ideas and advances will help shape the world we live in for generations to come."
On Jan. 31, 40 of the 300 semifinalists will be named as finalists. On March 8 these finalists will travel to Washington for a weeklong event. At a black-tie gala at the end of the week, 10 students will be chosen for scholarships totaling $500,000 with the top winner receiving a $100,000 scholarship. All finalists will be awarded a laptop run with the Intel? Core™2 Duo processor, and have the opportunity to display their research for the general public at the prestigious National Academy of Sciences.
Science Service, a nonprofit organization which works to advance the understanding and appreciation of science, has administered the STS since its inception in 1942. Elizabeth Marincola, president of Science Service, said, "The creativity of the Intel STS 2007 semifinalists is truly amazing - this year's projects address many of the pressing issues facing our country and the world, in categories from engineering to chemistry to space science. Science Service is proud to work with Intel and this year's students to further scientific inquiry and discovery."
The 1,705 entrants represent record participation for the Intel sponsorship, which began in 1998. Since assuming the title sponsorship, Intel has increased the annual awards and scholarships from $207,000 to $1.25 million. Intel's sponsorship of the Intel STS is part of the Intel? Education initiative to prepare today's teachers and students for tomorrow's demands.
