Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema paid an official visit to Korea from February 4 to 5. During the visit, he paid a courtesy call on President Roh Moo-hyun, held the ROK-Italy Foreign Ministers' Talks and met with the Minister of Unification.

At the ROK-Italy Foreign Ministers' Talks, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Song Min-soon asked Minister D'Alema to cooperate for the efforts to achieve substantial achievements at the bilateral summit meeting on the occasion of President Roh's upcoming visit to Italy from February 14 to 16. Minister Song also explained our bid to host the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu and asked for Italy's support.

The two ministers also exchanged views on ways to improve conditions for mutual investment, and agreed to make efforts to arrive at substantial cooperative measures at the Joint Economic Committee which will be held during the first half of this year. After the talks, they signed an agreement between the foreign ministries for political cooperation and a cultural exchange programme as planned.

During the talks, Minister Song explained our plan to attend the fifth round of the Six-Party Talks which will be held on February 8, and asked the Italian government, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, to render its support for diplomatic efforts by our Government and the concerned countries.

Minister D'Alema explained the unstable political situation in Lebanon, and highly commended the ROK's decision to deploy UN peacekeeping troops to Lebanon. Italy has sent about 3,000 troops to Lebanon, which is the most number of troops among the 25 countries that have deployed troops there. The ROK plans to send up to 350 troops to Lebanon sometime in June or July.
