LG and Nortel Demonstrate Technological Prowess at 3GSM World Congress
The demonstration by LG and Nortel is especially meaningful in that it shows the commercial availability of Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO*) - OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation/Multiplexing) based LTE technology. The 2x2 MIMO-OFDM technology used in LG’s handset has the capability of sending 20Mbps for both uplink and downlink on a 5MHz bandwidth. In this demonstration, LG and Nortel showed data transmission at 10Mbps speed between LG’s two LTE handsets and Nortel’s base station. More than twice as fast as HSDPA, which uses the same transmission frequency, this technology could allow high definition video streaming, or downloads as fast as an MP3 file in just over one second. The LTE handset developed by LG increases the possibility of commercial use by reducing complexity without lowering OFDM and MIMO performance. In addition, this world-first demonstration by LG Electronics demonstrates LTE technologies such as uplink multi-user MIMO and SC-FDMA* with low complex MIMO detection technique.
LTE is a 3GPP standard technology toward IMT-Advanced, and it is in the process of finalizing standardization by September 2007. Its core technology is based on OFDM and MIMO which are better for transmitting broadband data over CDMA networks and for maximizing spectral efficiency.
This demonstration is expected to accelerate the commercialization of MIMO-OFDM technology, which is the base of the 3G LTE system, and showcase the leading roles played in the market by LG Electronics and Nortel.
About MIMO*
Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) is the signal processing technology using the multiple antennas both in transmitter and receiver. Wireless MIMO communication can enhanced the peak data transmission rate by using spatial multiplexing method. This technology can expand the capability of wireless communication and greatly increasing transmission speed. Especially in a multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) system, a single base station can transmit to multiple mobile stations simultaneously to increase the sum data-rate and reduce the latency of mobile users.
About OFDM**
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) is a multi-user version of the popular OFDM technology which allocates data by separating frequency and time. Multiple access is achieved in OFDMA by assigning subsets of subcarriers to individual users in frequency and time domain. In OFDM system, since a wide channel is divided into several ones, overall bandwidth is saved by overlapping sub channels than in conventional FDMA. Because of these advantages, it has been adopted as standard technology in many wireless broadband systems.
About SC-FDMA***
Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA), which uses single carrier modulation and frequency domain equalization, is a technique that has similar performance and essentially the same overall complexity as those of OFDMA system. One prominent advantage over OFDMA is to provide peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) because of its single carrier structure. SC-FDMA has been great attention as an attractive alternative to OFDMA, especially in the uplink communications where lower PAPR greatly benefits the mobile device in terms of transmit power efficiency.
