HMP, which now has a workforce of 75 lawyers and 92 support staff, is currently at the heart of Asia’s highest profile legal battle: It acts as primary legal counsel to Lone Star Funds. The firm has particular capabilities in the finance and pharmaceutical sectors; clients include Korea Exchange Bank, Citibank, Novartis and Merck and Co.
Seoul Law Group, a boutique firm specializing in nimbler service to multinationals and smaller enterprises, has relocated its Gangnam operation to HMP’s Namdaemun offices, and brings clients including Apple, Siemens, Audi and S.C. Johnson. Its three key attorneys add significant expertise to HMP.
“Son Do-il is well known as an expert on M&As and arbitration, American Brendon Carr for his expertise in technology and employment law, and Joachim Nowak was the first German-admitted lawyer in town,” said Hwang.
“We are experts in our fields, but as a boutique, our size had limited what we could do,” said Son Do-il. “Now, with HMP, we can take on projects of any size.”
The acquisition is the latest step in HMP’s preparation for what the firm sees as inevitable in the near future: Korea’s legal market opening.
“Korea has had a closed legal market for too long, and is falling behind the times,” said Hwang, a rare voice in Korea’s legal community who argues for market opening. “We welcome foreign competitors to this market, and look forward to establishing strong partnerships when they land.”
HMP already boasts strong links with overseas law firms and multinational corporations. The firm has also hired American Eric Thorpe as marketing officer, the first at a Korean law firm, to focus on multinational clients.
