Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The 6th Korea-EU Joint Committee Meeting will be held on June 1 in Brussels, Belgium. This year’s meeting marks the 6th meeting since the first meeting was held in May 2001 in accordance with the Korea-EU Framework Agreement for Trade and Cooperation, which stipulates a comprehensive cooperative relationship between the two sides.

In this meeting, Mr. Cho Tae-yul, Deputy Minister for Trade at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT), will be heading a delegation consisting of 25 officials from 10 government agencies including MOFAT, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Environment, and Ministry of Construction and Transportation. The EU delegation will be headed by Mr. Karel Kovanda, Deputy Director-General for External Relations of the European Commission (EC), and consist of about 30 EC officials and representatives of EU member states.

The two sides will discuss Korea-EU pending trade issues including cosmetics, automobiles, and trade remedies, and furthering the cooperation in areas such as science technology, ICT, environment, education, and industry. They will also exchange views on the WTO/DDA negotiations, ASEM, EU’s new trade policies, and the present state of affairs of the Korean peninsula, among others.

* Before the upcoming Joint Committee Meeting, 6 working-level consultations on pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, automobiles, agriculture/SPS, intellectual property rights, civil aviation and etc., will be held on May 31.

In particular, Korea will explain its position and request EU’s cooperation on EU’s trade defense measures including countervailing duties on Hynix DRAM, anti-dumping duties on PSF (synthetic staple fibers of polyesters), and EU’s environment regulations such as the introduction of EU’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals), to avoid unfair damages that may affect Korean businesses.

With the official launching of Korea-EU FTA negotiations on May 6, which is expected to elevate trade ties between the two sides to a higher level, the upcoming Joint Committee Meeting is expected to contribute to strengthening Korea-EU bilateral relations in overall areas including politics, economics, and culture.
