President Roh Moo-hyun to visit Guatemala

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--President Roh Moo-hyun is scheduled to visit the Republic of Guatemala from July 1 to 5 to attend the International Olympic Committee (IOC) General Meeting in Guatemala City and to hold a summit with President Oscar Berger. At the IOC meeting, the IOC members are to determine the host city for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Before visiting Guatemala, the Korean President will make a stopover in Seattle from June 30 to July 1. He is expected to return to Seoul on July 7 after making a stop in Honolulu from July 5 to 6.

President Roh is scheduled to attend the annual general meeting of the members of the IOC that is scheduled for July 4 in Guatemala City. During the 119th IOC session, the President will deliver remarks in support of PyeongChang’s bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and make personal pitches to the IOC members.

While in Guatemala City, President Roh will hold talks with Guatemalan President Oscar Berger to discuss ways to strengthen substantive cooperation and how the two countries can improve bilateral collaboration in the economy and trade. They will also hold discussions on the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and in Central and South America.

The Korean President will also ask the Guatemalan Government to give special support to the Korean residents and businesses that are operating in the Central American country. There are approximately 10,000 Korean residents and 150 Korean companies.

President Roh is the first Korean head of state to visit Guatemala City since President Kim Young-Sam paid a visit there 11 years ago in 1996. The leaders of the two countries are scheduled to witness the signing of a bilateral agreement on visa waiver and an MOU on providing aid from Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund to be used for enhancing the information capacity of the Guatemalan educational system.

Visits to Seattle and Honolulu in the United States

President Roh Moo-hyun is scheduled to meet with Korean residents while in Seattle. During the visit to Honolulu, the President is planning to meet with leaders of the Korean community on the island and pay a visit to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Along with Arlington National Cemetery, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is one of the most prominent of the many national cemeteries in the United States. There are 1,242 soldiers and 865 unknown soldiers who sacrificed themselves during the Korean War resting in peace in the cemetery as well as the names of 8,195 American soldiers missing during the same war engraved on a Memorial there.
