Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, filed a lawsuit against Taiwanese computer maker Quanta Computers (Quanta), for infringement of patents related to LG’s DVD technology. LG is seeking an injunction for Quanta’s use of this technology as well as monetary compensation in the suit that was filed in U.S. District Court, the Western District of Wisconsin on July 3, 2007.

LG’s claims include infringement of four patents related to DVD standard. Quanta has been using these patents without LG’s permission to produce notebook computers that were supplied to U.S. computer companies.

LG previously filed a lawsuit against Quanta for infringing upon patents for its personal computer technology, in the U.S. District Court, the Northern District of California in 2000. The companies are currently awaiting the court’s final decision, which is expected to be handed down during the first half of 2008. In July 2006, the U.S. Court of Appeals overturned and handed back the decision of the trial court, which had originally decided that the Taiwanese company did not infringe on LG’s patents. LG expects the final ruling to be in its favor.

“LG’s proprietorship of DVD technologies is widely recognized throughout industry and the unlicensed use of our intellectual property is not acceptable under any circumstances,” said Jeong Hwan Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics Intellectual Property Center.

LG holds approximately 5,000 international patents for DVD technologies, which, along with its patents for personal computers, play a critical role in the company’s business.
