Cho Hee-yong, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

July 22, 2007- 20:30

As a peace-loving nation, the people of Korea has been maintaining friendly relations with the people of Afghanistan based on mutual respect and cooperation.

The kidnapped Koreans have been conducting medical voluntary services in Afghanistan. There should be no such act as taking innocent civilian lives as hostages.

The Dongui unit and Dasan unit, now stationed in Afghanistan, are non-combat units carrying out medical and relief support services. The Korean units are now in the process of completing all their assignments in Afghanistan. The Korean Government has its plan to withdraw these two units within this year.

The organization responsible for the kidnapping should release the Korean citizens promptly and safely. Under no circumstances should there be any loss of life.

The Korean government is prepared to make its utmost effort with the relevant parties in order to secure the speedy release of the Korean citizens.
