Chairperson of the African Union to Visit Korea

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Mr. Konare, will be officially visiting Korea on August 6(Mon.)~9(Thu.) at the invitation of Minister Song Min-soon.

During the visit, chairperson Konare will pay a courtesy call to President Roh Moo-hyun. He will also hold talks with Foreign Minister Song and share views on the overall channels for cooperation between Korea and Africa. Also, Mr. Konare will visit major industrial complex including Ulsan and Pohang, and will be receiving an honorary doctoral degree in politics from the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.

With regard to the Koreans held hostage in Afghanistan, chairperson Konare expressed his sincere words of comfort and solidarity to the Korean people and government by issuing a statement in the name of the Commission of the African Union on August 4, Saturday before his visit to Korea. He denounced the act of holding hostages by the kidnappers, urged them to stop further killing and insisted an immediate release of the abductees.

Korea’s African diplomacy, which has been promoted since President Roh Moo-hyun’s visits to African nations in March 2006, along with the launch of the development initiative plans in Africa, is expected to gain further momentum with Mr. Konare’s visit.
