Minister Pays a Courtesy Call to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Song Min-soon, on a visit to Saudi Arabia, paid a courtesy call to King Abdullah on Saturday August 25, and delivered President Roh Moo-hyun’s autograph letter. He also discussed the follow-up measures of President Roh’s state visit in March and the issue of Korean hostages held in Afghanistan.

Minister Song explained the four visions (Korea-GCC FTA, Sharing of Korea’s know-how on its economic development, Expansion of cultural exchange, and Enlargement of Korea-Middle East Cooperation Forum) for further cooperation between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Middle East, which President Roh had suggested in his speech at the Saudi’s Shura Council last March.. King Abdullah mentioned his hopes for the Korean corporations to actively participate in projects for developing Saudi’s social overhead capital. Minister Song also introduced the plan for launching the Middle East Society in order to further promote exchange between the ROK and the Middle East, asking for Riyadh’s interest and support.

Minister Song appreciated the Islam society’s efforts led by Saudi Arabia for the prompt and safe release of Korean nationals held hostage in Afghanistan. He expressed special gratitude for Saudi Arabia for spearheading the efforts as the leader country of the Islam world and requested its continued efforts for the release. In return, King Abdullah pointed out that the act of Taliban contradicts the teaching of Islam, which emphasizes peace, friendship and benevolence. He nevertheless mentioned Saudi Arabia will continue to take all possible measures to solve the hostage issue in collboration with other Islam leaders, notably Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
