Outcomes of Minister’s Visit to Russia

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Song, who is paying a visit to Russia on August 30 and 31, had discussions and attended a luncheon with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday. They had talks on the Koreans held hostage in Afghanistan, North Korean nuclear issue and the inter-Korean summit, substantial cooperation between the ROK and Russia, and Russia’s support for our bid to host the 2012 Expo in Yeosu.

Minister Song and Lavrov expressed satisfaction on the progress of ‘The Mutally Trustful and Comprehensive ROK-Russia Partnership,’ and agreed to further promote cooperation in areas of bilateral trade, investment, the TSR(Trans-Siberian Railway)/TKR(Trans-Korean Railway) Connection Project, space technology, energy, and resources. In particular, the two counterparts agreed to work in close collaboration regarding the Korean corporations’ activities in the Far Eastern Siberia, along with the construction of social infrastructure for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Minister Song acknowledged the Russian government’s constructive role in the Six-party talks for seeking peaceful means to settle the North Korean nuclear issue, and exchanged views with Minister Lavrov on measures to produce more desirable results in the future Six-party process.

Minister Lavrov expressed Russia’s sincere support for the inter-Korean summit, saying that the meeting of the two Korean leaders will be conducive to the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the Northeast Asia, along with resolving the North Korean nuclear issue. Also, both ministers concurred that the Six-party process and the mutually reinforcing development of inter-Korean relations are necessary for the peace and stability of Northeast Asia. In this regard, they agreed to continue close cooperation in order to make headway in the North Korean nuclear issue.

Minister Lavrov congratulated Minister Song on the release of the Koreans who had been taken hostage by Taliban militants. In return, Minister Song expressed gratitude to Russia and the international community for their assistance in freeing the abductees at an early date.

Minister Song met with the Acting Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Sobolev in the afternoon on Thursday, and discussed matters of mutual interest such as the North Korean nuclear issue, Korean hostages in Afghanistan, the ROK-Russia cooperation in defense industry, and the trilateral
cooperation among the ROK, North Korea and Russia.
