Kia Sorento outpaces competition as best-selling SUV in Slovakia
Sales in 2004 of the acclaimed model reached 308 units by year-end, as increasing numbers of customers found the popular mid-size sport utility vehicle to be a true performer and a stylish, comfortable, convenient ride -- all at an affordable price.
Total exports of the Sorento to European countries reached 36,284 units in 2004, a 21.2% rise over the previous year.
Yong-Hwan Kim, Kia’s Senior Executive Vice President and COO, said: “It is exciting to see the Kia nameplate rapidly gaining popularity in Slovakia, particularly in light of our first ever European manufacturing plant in the Zilina region of the country being well on schedule for completion later this year. Slovakia is poised to be a key hub in sustaining our recent tremendous growth in Europe well into the future.”
“This is a magnificent result for our distributorship, Kia Slovensko, if you take into consideration that we entered the Slovakian automotive market just one and a half years ago,” said Stanislav Grobar, General Manager, Kia Slovensko.
The Sorento outsold well established rivals in the local SUV market, such as the VW Touareg, Toyota RAV-4 and BMW X3. Last year also saw numerous awards for the Sorento, including “Best in Class” from Truck Trend magazine and “Best SUV Value” from the Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) of the US.
In addition to Kia’s initial 1.1 billion euro investment into the project, nine Korean parts suppliers also plan to build factories nearby. The additional site locations have been finalized and are expected to result in 300 million euro in additional investment and the creation of 3,700 new jobs, contributing greatly to the development of the country’s auto parts industry, while alleviating unemployment in the region.
