Hines Ward to establish Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea Foundation, a fund of the Beautiful Foundation
As part of his efforts to support multi-cultural and multi-ethnic causes, Korean-American football star Hines Ward has chosen to establish the Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea Foundation , a fund of the Beautiful Foundation in place of a separate foundation.
The Super Bowl MVP demonstrated his strong commitment to helping underprivileged mixed-race children in South Korea when he visited in May of last year. To act upon this commitment, he chose to donate a gift to the Beautiful Foundation, a shift from his initial intention to create a separate foundation.
Ward chose to create a fund rather than a separate foundation to maximize the benefits of his donation
Through this move, Ward plans to make the best use of his donation by avoiding the expense and complications of running a foundation. His final selections were the Pittsburgh Foundation in the United States and the Beautiful Foundation in South Korea, both of which are well known for transparent and reliable operations.
The Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation and the Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea Foundation will be formed under the fund programs of the U.S. and South Korean organizations, respectively.
The Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea Foundation, a fund of the Beautiful Foundation will utilize its US $50,000 in seed money in close consultation with the donor to address multi-cultural and multi-racial issues in South Korea, including the growing alienation from society experienced by children of multi-ethnic families.
"We are very glad that Hines Ward has chosen to partner with us in fulfilling his commitment to mixed-race children. Our foundation will do its best to serve his intentions faithfully," said Executive Director Park Won-soon.
Hines Ward, who could not visit the country due to the ongoing National Football League season in the U.S., revealed in a letter to the Foundation his aim to augment the fund in the future.
“Now that my fund is up and running, my management team and I will begin preparing an agenda of fundraising activities which we hope to implement throughout the year and especially during my off-season when I can return to Korea. As part of my plan, I also want to bring over some of my teammates and hold football camps for children in Korea and America,” said the aspiring philanthropist. (See the letter attached.)
Ward came to learn about the Beautiful Foundation while seeking a reliable partner foundation in South Korea. He appreciated the transparent operations of the grass-root organization, and contacted the foundation.
Taking his first steps as a philanthropist, the renowned football player has stated he was born to do more than solely play football. From now on, his fans will think of him not simply as their favorite football star, but also as a philanthropist committed to resolving multi-cultural and multi-ethnic issues in South Korea.
Anyone who shares the goals of the Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea Foundation, a fund of the Beautiful Foundation can join the fund through matching gifts.
[Note] How does the Beautiful Foundation operate funds?
The Beautiful Foundation, a South Korean non-profit fundraiser well-known for its public awareness initiative ‘1% Sharing Campaign’, operates a fund program in which donors wishing to engage in ongoing philanthropic efforts can establish funds under their own name rather than establishing individual foundations. Currently, the organization operates over 100 philanthropic funds, including those created by individuals, married couples, groups of friends, families spanning generations, and companies. The Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea Foundation will be created under this program. Major figures who have similar funds at the Beautiful Foundation include surviving family members of the late Suh Sung-hwan, former CEO of cosmetics company AMOREPACIFIC (Beautiful World Fund), the well-known cartoonist Huh Young-man (Raising Danny Seos Fund), former justice minister Kang Kum-sil (matching gifts to Island Fund), former chairman of American Chamber of Commerce in Korea Jeffry D. Johns (Ju-Gyeong-Yah-Dok Scholarship Fund), Club Carmania (Carmania Fund), and many others.
