Outcomes of Minister’s Visit to Israel

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Song Min-soon paid a courtesy call on the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and had Korea-Israel Foreign Ministers’ Talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on December 2. Minister Song and Minister Livni had discussions on bilateral pending issues such as strengthening collaborative ties in areas of economy and trade, and also on regional issues including the Middle East Peace Conference in Annapolis.

During the Foreign Ministers’ Talks, both ministers noted that the cooperative exchanges between Korea and Israel have increased dramatically, and agreed to further promote substantial cooperation in areas of trade, investment, aviation, tourism, science, technology and culture. In order to discuss on specific plans to promote cooperation, the two sides agreed to hold the 4th Korea-Israel Economic Committee in early 2008.

Minister Song explained the progress made at the Six-party Talks, and acknowledged the efforts of the involved Middle East countries to settle peace in this region. He also expressed the support of the Korean government for the peace process of the Middle East. Minister Livni explained the significance and the outcomes of the Middle East Peace Conference held on November 27 in Annapolis. He noted that the meeting was a success, and mentioned the position of Israel on future peace process. Minister Song stressed the importance of action by the involved parties rather than mere exchange of words in future peace process.

During his courtesy call on the Israeli Prime Minister Olmert, Minister Song congratulated the success at the Middle East Peace Conference in Annapolis, and hoped for further productive outcomes by making steady progress in future Israel-Palestine peace negotiations. Minister Olmert stressed that although the peace talks will have many obstacles, it is the Israel government’s position to draw results by making agreements. Moreover, Minister Song and Minister Olmert shared a common view that strengthening international nuclear non-proliferation, such as resolving the Iranian nuclear issue by peaceful means, will benefit both Korea and Israel.

Minister Song’s visit to Israel served as an opportunity to further promote Korea-Israel relations, and also to express Korea’s vast interest in the peace process of the Middle East by having meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders right after the Middle East Peace Conference in Annapolis.
