Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Song Min-soon, currently on a visit to Lebanon, visited the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Headquarters and the ‘Dongmyong Unit’ dispatched in southern part of the country on November 30.

Minister Song met with Major General Claudio Graziano, Commander of the UNIFIL and noted that the Peacekeeping Forces were contributing to not only to the political stability in Lebanon, but also to peace and security in the Middle East. They also exchanged views on the public order situation in southern Lebanon.

Major General Graziano acknowledged the activities of the ‘Dongmyong Unit’ and the excellence of Korean troops. He further stated that the Korean soldiers were winning the public confidence of Lebanon, and that they were the role model of other UNIFIL troops.

After the meeting, Minister Song visited the ‘Dongmyong Unit’ stationed in the southern region of Tyre. He had luncheon with the Korean soldiers and delivered words of encouragement. Through his luncheon remarks, Minister Song thanked the unit members for their services amid insecure public order. He asked all soldiers to undertake their duties until their safe return.

Minister Song is the first Korean Foreign Minister to visit troops sent as the UN Peacekeeping Forces. His visit served as an opportunity to declare the active support of the Korean government for the UN Peacekeeping Operations.

The UNIFIL, made by the 1978 UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 425, has been strengthened both in terms of its duty and the number of soldiers according to the UNSC Resolution 1701 adopted in August 2007. Korea has sent the ‘Dongmyong Unit’ comprised of 350 peacekeepers in July this year.
