Statement by Minister Song Min-soon at the 5th Korea-Middle East Cooperation Forum

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Over 200 participants representing the governments and the political, economic, cultural, academic, religious sectors and mass media from Korea, the Middle East and North Africa (hereafter “the Middle East”), took part in the “Fifth Forum for Korea-Middle East Cooperation” held on 7 December, 2007 in Seoul, to discuss various ways to enhance partnership between Korea and the Middle East. The Forum was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, Korea International Trade Association and Korea Association of the Middle East Studies.

All the delegations welcomed this important event which served as an occasion for discussing ways to promote mutual understanding between Korea and the Middle East while enhancing cooperation in various areas of mutual interests. To this end, the participants have agreed as follows:

1. Expansion of Cooperation through Enhanced Mutual Understanding

The participants recognized the progressive development of the cooperative relations between Korea and the Middle East in various areas including the political, economic, social and cultural domains. In addition, the participants agreed on the need to make every effort to further strengthen the cooperation and to enhance mutual understanding between Korea and the Middle East.

2. Sharing of Economic Development Experiences

The participants agreed that Korea and the Middle East should advance their economic levels by sharing their respective economic development experiences. The participants shared the view that Korea and the Middle East would seek to achieve mutual prosperity in the post-Oil era by complementing each other’s efforts and expertise in high-technology industries, especially in electronics, communication, and information technology.

3. Promotion of Exchanges in Cultural and Civilizational Spheres

The participants recognized that promoting cooperation in cultural and civilizational spheres serves as the basis for expanding cooperation between Korea and the Middle East. In this regard, the participants agreed to continue to make every effort to promote exchanges and mutual visits in these areas.

4. Establishment of the Middle East Society

The participants welcomed the joint initiative led by the Korean Government in conjunction with the governments of the Middle East and the private sectors of both Korea and the Middle East to launch the Middle East Society with a view to enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation between the two sides. They further expressed support to this joint effort and recognized that the organization, once established, will play a pivotal role in strengthening cooperation in all areas, including political, economic and cultural areas.

5. Future of the Forum for Korea-Middle East Cooperation

The participants shared the view that the fifth session of the Forum was useful in promoting mutual understanding between Korea and the Middle East and expanding cross-sector exchanges and personal networks. They further agreed to make joint efforts to develop the capacity of the Forum and to nurture it into a forum for substantive discussions.
