Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Korea was elected as a new member of the Consultative Committee (CC) of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) at the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York on December 18, local time. Councilor Enna Park of the Permanent Mission of Korea to the United Nations will serve as a member of the Consultative Committee for a three-year term from January 2008.

UNIFEM is the only organization that deals with women issues and related projects in the UN system, and it promotes projects for the empowerment of women in developing countries, ending violence against women, and the participation of women in establishing peace and stability in conflict areas.

Korea, already a member of the bureau of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), will actively join the gender mainstreaming efforts of the UN since it is given responsibility to promote the empowerment of women and gender equality by being elected as a member of the UNIFEM’s Consultative Committee.
