Outcomes of Bilateral Foreign Ministers’ Talks on the sidelines of the Alliance of Civilizations Annual Forum

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Song Min-soon had bilateral talks with Foreign Ministers of Spain, Turkey, Yemen and Bulgaria on the sidelines of the Alliance of Civilizations (AOC) Annual Forum in Madrid, January 15. They had discussions on matters of mutual interest and ways to promote substantial cooperation between Korea and the respective countries.

Minister Song and Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos exchanged views on matters of mutual interest including the Alliance of Civilizations, and agreed to further strengthen cooperative ties between Korea and Spain. Both ministers agreed that the exchange of high-level officials is crucial to the development of bilateral relations. Minister Moratinos explained that currently Spanish Prince Felipe and Prime Minister Zapatero are respectively considering their visits to Korea, and expressed his willingness to visit Korea this year to attend the High-level Policy Consultation. Minister Moratinos also mentioned that the Spanish government was exerting efforts for the early opening of the Spanish Council in Seoul to promote cultural exchanges between Korea and Spain, and for the improvement of the visa issuing process for the Korean-national resident workers in Spain to promote bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

Minister Song and his Turkish counterpart Minister Babacan noted with satisfaction the continuous cooperation between Korea and Turkey in various areas including the high-level official exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade, investment and culture. They also discussed the participation of Korean companies in Turkey’s nuclear power plant construction projects. Minister Song asked for the support of the Turkish government for Korea’s candidature for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2013-2014 term. The two sides exchanged views on the situation in the northern part of Iraq which borders Turkey, and agreed to have close consultations on the regional situation and on the safety of Korean troops stationed in Arbil.

Minister Song and Yemenite Foreign Minister Al-Qirbi shared expectations for the Korea-Yemen bilateral relations to be strengthened with the re-opening of the Korean Embassy in Yemen. Minister Song noted the support of the Yemenite government for the ‘Middle East Society’ that is to be established in Korea to enhance understanding on the Islamic countries. The two sides also agreed to promote Korea’s investment in other areas besides oil and gas in Yemen. Minister Al-Qirbi expressed his appreciation to the Korean government for its assistance to Yemen including support for the ‘Project for the Institute of Advanced Technology Training’ and provision of computers to the newly built Foreign Ministry of Yemen.

Minister Song and his Bulgarian counterpart Minister Kalfin noted with satisfaction the Korea-Bulgaria exchanges and cooperation since then-Prime Minister Han Myong-sook’s visit to Bulgaria in June 2006, and discussed ways to promote economic cooperation such as expanding Korea’s investment in Bulgaria, and increasing the volume of bilateral trade. Minister Song asked for the support of Bulgarian government for Korea’s candidature for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2013-2014 term. The two ministers also exchanged views on the situation in the Balkan region including the issue of Kosovo.
