WitsView unveils Jan08 FHD street price survey
At the moment, the availability of FHD 32" models remains limited, thus they exhibit bigger price fluctuations. In January, its average price increased to USD 927, up by 10% MoM. The increase stemmed from the sales discount of certain models coming to an end, and the fact that the cheaper models were not widely sold by the retailers. In the Japan market, sales of Sharp's 32" FHD TVs were mainly concentrated on its DS series. The new LC-32DS3 is now available in 3 colors: Red, Blue and White. The earlier GS series, which is cheaper, is already gradually fading from the market. These developments have caused the average FHD price in Japan to increase sequentially to USD 1,224. Meanwhile, in the US market, prices for the 32" FHD was also up. In December, a 12% price discount was seen for the LC-32GP1U, but in January, they returned to USD 1,121.
In the 37" segment, prices for the FHD models also edged up. The average price reached USD 1,219, up 1.1% MoM. Meanwhile, the 1366x768 HD models were down by 1.8% to USD 1,060. Consumers thus need to pay a 15% premium for the FHD sets. However, it should be noted that in Korea, the average price of the 37" FHD sets (USD 1,366) were lower than the HD models (USD 1,442). This was mainly attributed to the fact that LG, who is the biggest supplier, did not position the FHD models as a particularly high end product.
In the 40" segment, the average price for both the FHD and HD models dropped. The FHD sets slipped to USD 1,877, down by 3%, while the HD sets dropped by 0.6% to USD 1,288. Excluding the US market, which was below USD 1,500, the FHD prices of the other regions were all above USD 1,600. In January, FHD models accounted for roughly 43.8% of the 40" class. Among the major markets, only the US and Japan experienced a market penetration rate of more than 50%.
In the 42" segment, the average price of the FHD sets reached USD 1,473, down 4.1% from last month's USD 1,536. Separately, the HD models fell to USD 1,276, down by 3.2%. The FHD price premium reached merely 15%, much lower than the 45.8% of the 40" FHD sets. In Japan, the 42" FHD models were only 5.5% more expensive than their HD peers. As for the FHD market penetration rate, the the 42" reached 44.8%, roughly the same as the 43.8% of the 40" class.
In the 46" FHD segment, they were down 1.1% MoM to USD 2,515, 20.5% more expensive that the HD models. Among the 32"~46" size group, the 46" enjoyed the highest FHD market penetration rate, attaining a global average of 68.2%. Among the major markets, the ratio all exceeded 50%, where Japan enjoyed a 100% ratio. China was the only region where HD models still account for the vast majority.
In the PDP segment, the average price of the 42" FHD models reached USD 1,883, up by 2.4% MoM. Prices continued to drop in the US and UK markets, while they trended upwards in Japan and China. As for the HD/SD models (42" TVs featuring SD resolution still being sold) their average price stood at USD 1,481, up slightly by 1.0%. The FHD 42" PDP TV was USD 410 more expensive than the same-sized FHD LCD TV, but cheaper than the 40". Yet, the FHD versions only took up 5.6% of the 42" plasma TVs market. Finally, in the 50" segment, the average price of the FHD sets reached USD 2,736, roughly the same as last month.
