Outcomes of the Korea-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Yu Myung-hwan met with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi over luncheon on March 21 and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest including development of the Korea-China relations and the North Korean nuclear issue.

Minister Yang mentioned that Minister Yu’s visit to China on his first trip abroad shows Lee administration’s willingness to promote the ‘Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership’ with China. Minister Yu said that the Korean government puts great importance on its bilateral relationship with China and plans to further develop cooperative ties with China.

Minister Yu laid stress on the importance of mutual exchanges of high-level officials between the two countries for the development of bilateral relationship. Minister Yang welcomed President Lee Myung-bak’s visit to China and stated that a visit to Korea by Chinese high-level officials is under consideration. At Minister Yu’s invitation, Minister Yang expressed his hope of visiting Korea at an early stage.

As for further promotion of cooperative ties between Korea and China, both sides shared views on the importance of increasing exchange of human resources especially the youth. To this end, they agreed to consider a temporary visa waiver and multiple-entry visas for Koreans traveling to China during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Minister Yu asked China to render continuous cooperation in dealing with the North Korean defectors issue, and Minister Yang, in response, said that the Chinese government will continue to handle the issue in accordance with the domestic and international law and the spirit of humanitarianism.

The two sides shared the understanding that historical issues should not be an obstacle to the development of the Korea-China relations, and has agreed to continue the academic exchanges between relevant institutions of the two countries.

Minister Yu asked for active cooperation from China with regard to the exhumation of the Patriot Ahn’s remains. Mr. Yang has mentioned that Patriot Ahn is not only a hero for Koreans, but also a highly respected persona in China, and the Chinese government will continue to work with the Korean government on exhumation operation.

Mr. Yang explained China’s position on the Taiwan’s referendum on its accession to the United Nations under the name of Taiwan and asked for support from the Korean government in this matter. Minister Yu mentioned that the Korean government will continue to maintain the One-China policy, and that it regards Taiwan’s promotion of the referendum as not in line with the One-China policy and thus not ideal.

Mr. Yang explained again China’s stance on the current situation in Tibet.

The two sides noted close cooperation between the two countries for a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue and agreed to continue to work closely in order to resolve the problems of the nuclear declaration issue and enter the phase of nuclear dismantlement at an earliest date possible.

The two sides agreed to continue to cooperate closely on the international stage, including the UN.
