Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Yu Myung-hwan paid a courtesy call on Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on March 20 and exchanged views on the Korea-China relations, economy and trade cooperation, cultural and youth exchanges, the North Korean nuclear issue and issues of Taiwan and Tibet.

Both sides noted the rapid growth of bilateral cooperation between Korea and China since their establishment of diplomatic relations, and agreed to further promote cooperation in various areas.

Premier Wen expressed his hopes for President Lee Myung-bak’s visit to China at the earliest date possible, and further stated that a visit to Korea by high-level officials is under consideration. Minister Yu hoped that two leaders of Korea and China would meet at the earliest date possible to freely exchange opinions on further developing bilateral ties.

Premier Wen also expressed his hopes to promote bilateral cooperation in areas of high technology, logistics, finance and tourism, and to start the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations at the opportune time. Minister Yu welcomed the proposal to expand economic cooperation, and stated that Korea has a vast interest in entering the areas of information and communication, as well as nuclear energy.

Both sides shared a common view on the need to increase cultural and youth exchanges to expand the base of Korea-China relations and to promote future-oriented cooperation. Minister Yu and Premier Wen agreed to exert collaborative efforts to this end.

Minister Yu said that he hopes for continued cooperation between Korea and China for an early resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue, and that he looks forward to China’s active role in this regard.

Premier Wen mentioned that he hopes for an early resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue by resolving the differences in view on the nuclear declaration issue, and that the development of the system for peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia will be pursued after realizing the denuclearization.

Premier Wen expressed gratitude for Korea’s consistent support for the One-China policy. He said that Taiwan’s promotion of the referendum on the UN membership increases the tension between the two sides and hinders peace in the Asia Pacific region, and he asked Korea to support China in this matter. Minister Yu mentioned that the promotion of the referendum is not ideal as it increases the tension between the two sides.

Premier Wen explained that even though some insurgents have created unrest and disturbed the social order in Tibet, the law, order and stability have been restored. Minister Yu mentioned that he hopes for an amicable settlement of the Tibet situation with no more casualties.
