Seoul Town Meeting, first held in 2000, has served as an opportunity for expatriates in Seoul to present their complaints and demands on living in Seoul. And, the ideas brought up in the annual meetings have been reflected in the creation of municipal policies.
The City Government has dramatically improved foreigners' living conditions by opening Seoul Global Center for one-stop service for foreigners, providing the 24-hour English Medical Referral Service, and establishing Youngsan International School after actively reflecting the foreign residents suggestions.
This year's Seoul Town Meeting will be held at CityHall's Taepyeong Hall on 30th April at 2pm with the presence of the City Mayor SeHoon Oh and the foreign residents in Seoul.
Foreigners have high expectations on this year's Seoul Town Meeting as it is newly designed based on the past nine meetings and their achievements.
The City government will try to attract various kinds of people from diverse communities or groups with different nationalities.
The meetings in the past mainly focused on understanding the difficulties facing foreign residents. But, this year's meeting will emphasize on solving problems and providing alternatives by identifying foreigners' policy demands and giving effective policy alternatives.
A city official said this year, the whole meeting will be taped, and foreign residents who are not able to attend this meeting can later watch the video clip on Seoul Global Center website(http://global.seoul.go.kr). As they can voice their opinions and raise questions after watching the video, active participation will be expected, he added.
This year's agenda include: Seoul Metropolitan Government's policies for international schools and Medical Service for foreigners.
The City must provide high level of schooling for their children, and upgrade foreigners' medical and living environment to meet global standards in order to attract talented foreigners abroad and encourage the foreign residents in Seoul to make continuous investment and to stay longer,
Each session will consist of presentations, discussions and QAs. During an open-question session, questions submitted prior to the meeting will be discussed. Information on rental apartment for foreigners will also be available.
After the discussions, the participants can enjoy Samulnori, Korean Traditional Percussion Group.
