Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Korea's human rights record is to be reviewed during the 2nd session of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the United Nations Human Rights Council slated for May 5-19, 2008 in Geneva. Evaluation on Korea's overall human rights situation will be on May 7, 2008.

The Korean government will actively participate in the review meeting by sending a delegation to Geneva, headed by 2nd Vice Minister Kim Sung-hwan, and comprised of human rights specialists from relevant ministries including the MOFAT, the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Gender Equality, Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of National Defense. Korea will explain its human rights situation and seek concrete measures to improve its human rights record through dialogue and cooperation with the international community.

The UPR was newly introduced by the UN Human Rights Council, which succeeded Human Rights Commission in 2006. Under UPR's work plans, human rights records of 16 countries were evaluated in the first session of Human Rights Council last April. During the 2nd session in May, 16 more member states' records will be scrutinized, including that of Korea.
