Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Minister Yu Myung-hwan and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi signed the ‘Treaty Between the Republic of Korea and the People's Republic of China for the Transfer of Sentenced Persons' on May 27 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, at the presence of President Lee Myung-bak.

As the Korean government may have the sentenced persons in China with Korean nationality serve the rest of their sentence in Korea, the Treaty will ease their suffering as well as facilitate their social rehabilitation. As of May 8, 193 Koreans are serving their sentences imposed against them in Chinese prisons, and 342 Chinese in Korean prisons.

With its accession to the ‘European Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons' in 2005, the Korean government may transfer its sentenced people from prisons of 62 state parties to the Convention. Also, the Korean government is currently seeking to conclude bilateral treaties on the transfer of sentenced persons with non-state parties to the Convention with which Korea has close ties in the people-to-people exchanges. The Treaty for the Transfer of Sentenced Persons with China is the second one to be signed, following the one with Mongolia in May 2007.
