NAVTEQ to introduce new field vehicles for Korea
By beginning operation of new vehicles, the total number of field vehicles that is operated in Korea reached 40 and the number will increase to 50 in total by the end of 2008. The company plans on driving approximately 5000 kilometers per month, or 60,000 km for one year to maintain a map which is fresh, detailed and reliable.
The new vehicles, which are sports utility vehicles (SUVs) rather than sedans, are equipped with exclusive in-vehicle data collection system. Built on a foundation of proprietary software and the innovative use of high-tech hardware, it enables NAVTEQ geographic analysts to accurately collect the features of the roads you drive. Each system includes Differential Global Positioning System(DGPS) which is an enhancement to Global Positioning System with error growth of 0.10 meters per 100 km, antennae, receivers, magnetic mounts etc.
NAVTEQ’s field vehicles also are equipped with video cameras. These cameras enable NAVTEQ geographic analysts to collect and later analyze complex road features.
The Korea database currently features 100% coverage of the navigable road network including more than 170,000 kilometres of road, almost 1,000,000 unique field collected Points of Interest, alert features such as speed traps and school zones and visual features such as topography, 3D landmarks and intersections and aerial imagery.
