BOE HYDIS to Increase Wide Viewing Angle Products
Under its brand name, VIEWIZ, the company aims to increase the 2005 product volume to 700,000 panels, beginning with 300,000 panels for the first half of this year (based on large-size units). Ten percent (300,000 panels) of BOE HYDIS’ panel production last year was manufactured with wide viewing angle AFFS technology.
In addition, small-sized AFFS-applied products for mobile applications will enter full manufacturing from the second half of this year, and the recently launched BOE OT’s G5 product line will begin to apply AFFS technology to its 26-inch and 32-inch TVs. These strategies significantly increase the percent of AFFS-applied products in the company’s overall line.
The company’s specific concentration on the expansion and diversification of its AFFS-applied product offerings is in response to consumer demands from various product market sectors.
From the tablet PC and tablet monitor sector, where BOE HYDIS leads the market share, wide viewing angle benefits are being recognized and demanded. Currently, 70 percent of the market consists of wide viewing angle products.
Increasing demands can be heard from the domestic and overseas mobile phone industries as well, as more consumers discover the advantages of high visibility and wide angle viewing on their mobile LCDs.
The industrial markets specializing in aircrafts, military supplies, and hospital equipment are proving that they too, prefer products with wide angle viewing and high reliability as demands steadily increase.
Last December, BOE HYDIS announced an AFFS patent license agreement with Japan’s Hitachi Displays LTD. Hitachi’s acquisition of the company’s technology raised considerable attention within the industry. Now BOE HYDIS is discussing another patent licensing contract with Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese panel manufacturers - an indication of BOE HYDIS’ growth and technological influence.
AFFS has been developed by BOE HYDIS over the past decade in anticipation of becoming a leading high-quality TFT-LCD technology. By accurately controlling liquid crystals, AFFS supports a display angle of 180 degrees for both horizontal and vertical viewing and prevents color shift. It also significantly improves transmittance and has a high contrast ratio that reduces power consumption by 20 to 30 percent compared to other competitive products due to the high level of brightness.
In an LCD power consumption test conducted by a world renowned CPU manufacturer, BOE HYDIS tablet/note book products recorded the lowest power consumption. This test outcome has added to the interest in AFFS technology from the notebook sector as low power consumption is always of importance to wireless product manufacturers and consumers.
With these successful solutions, AFFS is emerging as the new technical standard for those attempting to achieve wide viewing angles and high visibility. It has traditionally been divided between Hitachi’s IPS and Fujitsu’s VA technologies
Doug K. Kim, Chief Sales Officer for BOE HYDIS and BOE OT says, “For information and entertainment devices where portability and mobility are important, high visibility is also becoming essential. At BOE HYDIS, where we focus on small to medium-size products and special applications, we’re planning on further extending our VIEWIZ brand product lineup. And at BOE OT, our main larger-scale product manufacturer, we’re planning to stress specific features of AFFS technology in our TV marketing activities.”
