Gov't expands training courses in overseas construction industry

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said Thursday (July 3) that Korean builders will be able to win overseas construction orders amounting to $45 billion at the end of this year, considering the record-high winning orders Korean firms gained during the first half of 2008.

The ministry said in the press release that Korean companies secured overseas construction orders worth $25.9 billion during the first half of 2008, showing 61 percent increase year-on-year.

Considering the brisk construction market in Asia and the Middle East, the ministry said that Korean firms will be able to receive total overseas construction orders worth $45 billion at the end of this year.

To support overseas construction as the country's new growth engine, the Korean government has been concentrating on fostering a highly skilled workforce in the construction sector.

Considering the future shortage of Korean workers in the overseas construction industry over the next three years, the country plans to expand training programs in overseas construction sector currently provided by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affair's International Contractors Association of Korea.

Under the ministry's plan, the International Contractors Association of Korea has expanded the training program to both Korean staff of small and medium-sized firms and large corporations, and increased the number of program participants from 1,500 to 1,800 from May 2008.

Also, the association and the Korea Institute of Construction Technology Education are to jointly open a new education course on plant construction technology for 400 participants in July.
