Merck Breaks Ground on New Advanced Technology Center
“Merck will continue to support their customers, allowing them to achieve business success through our advanced technologies and close relationships,” said Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, a member of the Merck family and Chairman of the Board of Partner of E. Merck OHG. “This new investment in Korea reconfirms our commitment and responsibility to contribute innovative solutions for the future success of the Korean display industry” .
Merck is investing 14 billion Korean Won (? 11 million) in the ATC in order to improve its research and development and manufacturing capacities in Korea and thus strengthen Merck’s position as market and technology leader for liquid crystals materials.
Already in 2002, Merck established Merck Advanced Technology Ltd. (MAT) to consolidate all its display business and operational activities in one location to better serve the Korean LCD industry. With this initial investment, a production and warehouse site was opened in Poseung in 2002.
Merck’s close ties with customers are already apparent at MAT, which offers a one-stop cooperation system to Korean LCD manufacturers. The system begins in the research and development phase and moves on to production, quality management and business cooperation.
MAT’s cutting-edge technologies are not limited to liquid crystals but also include OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes), organic TFT (Thin-Film Transistors), organic materials for solar cells, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips, optical film materials as well as RM (Reactive Mesogens) for optical compensation films, which improve the picture quality of LCD televisions. In 2007, Merck was honored by the Ministry of Science & Technology and was granted a Prime Minister Award on the Seventh Foreign Company Day in November for its contributions to the Korean Economy.
