Korea raises minimum wage by 6.1%

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Korea's Labor Ministry said Tuesday (July 22) that the government set the minimum wage for next year at 4,000 won an hour, up 6.1 percent from the current 3,770 won, and posted official notice of the move.

The notice takes effect as of Jan. 1, according to the ministry.

The rise also means employers cannot cut the overall salaries of their employees by cutting down on their working hours, the ministry said.

This means if a worker, who works 45 hours a week at the current minimum wage, is put on a 40-hour a week job at the increased wage, thus resulting in a near 10,000 won reduction in weekly salary, the employer still needs to pay at least as much as the worker used to earn at the current minimum wage, the ministry said.
