Team to spearhead PyeongChang Olympic bid announced
Mr. Han accepted the nomination as chairman today from Kim Jin-sun, the governor of Gangwon Province, where PyeongChang is located. An accomplished leader in public service, Mr. Han also held such posts as Korea’s foreign minister and minister of finance during his distinguished career. Final confirmation of his position, and all others on the bid committee, will take place at their inaugural meeting at the end of March.
The 91-person team includes members with expertise in a wide range of fields but particular depth in international relations and the Olympic movement.
Entrusted to the post of Secretary General was Lee Kyung-woo, now serving as Korea’s Ambassador to Myanmar and a former top diplomat in Jordan as well as Secretary General of the 2010 Yeosu World Expo Committee. Mr. Rocky Kang-Ro Yoon also joins as co-Secretary General and will be chiefly responsible for international affairs with the IOC and other major institutions.
Mr. Yoon’s contributions to IOC and Korean Olympic Committee affairs, notably as the director of KOC’s international affairs division for over two decades, are considered key assets to the bid team. His past work as Co-Secretary General for the 2010 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee will also be important. He served as a Member of IOC Evaluation Commission for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The PyeongChang Olympic bid team will feature a 20-person Executive Committee, whose Executive President will be Kim Jin-sun, the governor of Gangwon province.
Additionally, a separate Technical Committee will oversee areas of facilities, transportation, accommodations and other environmental needs. Bid support committees will be formed in the National Assembly and by the residents of Gangwon province.
Also announced today were the 91 standing members of the committee. Each of them was handpicked by the Korean Ministry of Culture & Tourism and the KOC for his or her unique area of expertise. Their diverse backgrounds will enable the committee to work efficiently and knowledgeably on every front.
Marshalling the vigorous grassroots support of its citizens, Gangwon provincial leaders have already set up an administrative support base, and to date special task forces for promotional and other activities are active in several Gangwon cities and counties. Further, officials are expecting that winter ski resorts in the region will add further fuel to Korea’s Olympic fire by forming individual bid support teams shortly.
Finally, the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee will jumpstart its “Dream Team” - an elite band of around 40 professionals that will attend to the bid application, IOC site inspection and other details throughout the bidding process. The team, which performed capably for the 2010 bid as well, will be reorganized and reinforced this week and launch on all cylinders following the inaugural general meeting.
