Nairobi--(뉴스와이어)--A publication to mark the 20th anniversary of the UNEP Sasakawa Prize was launched today at Expo 2005 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

"This publication is a substantive record of an historic event that brought together some of the most respected environmental experts from around the world," said UNEP Executive Director Klaus Toepfer, speaking at the launch ceremony.

In his message at the 20th anniversary event, Yohei Sasakawa, President of The Nippon Foundation which sponsors the Prize, said: "It is my sincere hope that those of us gathered in Beijing for the 20th anniversary will contribute to the creation of a new system. We must do our best to protect and preserve the environment, so that we can share the beauty of this earth with future generations."

Since 1984, the UNEP Sasakawa Environment Prize, has been awarded annually to individuals who have made outstanding global contributions to the management and protection of the environment.

The 20th anniversary celebrations, organized under the overarching theme of Environment and Development ? The Last Twenty Years: Progress Where? were held in Beijing, People's Republic of China from 27 to 29 September 2004.
This event was the culmination of more than two decades of recognizing environmental achievements worldwide.

The publication encapsulates the vision of some of the world's most eminent environmental experts. It is based on the outcome of four panel discussions and a plenary session, in which the winners and selection committee members of this prestigious Prize, together with other noted environmentalists from the Asia and Pacific Region, expressed their views on four of the more pressing environmental issues of the day: air, energy, land and water.

One of the main outcomes of the panel discussions is that developed countries have a responsibility to ensure that environmental protection remains high on the agenda in the 21st century. As stated by Lord Clinton-Davis, Chairman of the Prize Selection Committee, "developed countries have a duty? since it is unreasonable to expect developing countries to do so. However, they must strive to keep up, for only through collective cooperation can we mitigate harm to our planet before it's too late."

Copies of the book will be made available to dignitaries and members of the media at the launch.
